BETVICTOR WEBER CUP TEAMS EXPAND TO FIVE PLAYERS

February 10th, 2020

Team Europe and Team USA will each line-up with five players for the 2020 BetVictor Weber Cup with two members of each team to earn automatic selection via the PBA Tour Points List.

The 2020 BetVictor Weber Cup will take place at Morningside Arena, Leicester From Friday, June 5 until Sunday, June 7 and ticket information will be available soon.

After the success of the tournament’s first staging in America, the Weber Cup returns to England this summer as USA and Europe alternate hosting duties. As the event continues its significant growth, both teams will now include five players each with Chris Barnes returning as American captain and Dom Barrett leading Europe for a sixth time.

Two members of each team will qualify automatically via the PBA Tour Points List, with ten events from January until the USBC Masters in March counting towards BetVictor Weber Cup selection. The top two Americans and the top two Europeans on the PBA Tour Points List at this stage will join their respective teams in Leicester, with the final two spots to be chosen by the team captains.

Team USA will be defending champions when the annual transatlantic tenpin tussle returns to England. Barnes’ team stormed to an 18-14 victory at Mandalay Bay Resort, Las Vegas, last June but Team Europe is determined to win back the trophy and will look for inspiration from their famous home fans.

Matchroom Sport COO Emily Frazer said: “Expanding the teams to five players each is a significant step in the right direction for the BetVictor Weber Cup. This allows both the players and fans to see the full potential of the event format and its competitiveness. The BetVictor Weber Cup is a team event and it is built for five players on each squad; this will open the door for more exciting, tense games, less repeated matches and strategic thinking from our Captains.

“Partnering with the PBA for the second year running is a great move for this event, as players now have the opportunity to earn their position at the BetVictor Weber Cup team on merit. Following the PBA Tour Points List, fans can keep up-to-date with the leaderboard and their favourite players. We are committed to a home and away host venue, now we are committed to a 5-man team. The BetVictor Weber Cup has finally stepped up a gear and this summer will be the best show yet.”

PBA Chief Executive Officer Colie Edison said: “We’re thrilled to be partnering with the BetVictor Weber Cup for a second consecutive year and to be giving our PBA players the kind of international exposure they deserve. The BetVictor Weber Cup—much like the Ryder Cup in golf—is a transatlantic rivalry that ups the ante for the sport and gives our fans even more reason to root for their favorite players.”

The move to five players per team means the total BetVictor Weber Cup prize fund increases to $75,000 with members of the winning team taking home $10,000 each and the runners-up receiving $5,000 per player.
